|Douglas E Gunderson, born October 15, 1921 passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on March 31, 2014.
Douglas was raised in Chippewa Falls, WI and honorably served our country in the armed forces during WWII and through the attack on Pearl Harbor. On February 5, 1946, he married the love of his life, Mary Elise Phalen.
In 1951 Douglas purchased the Twin City Laundry of Menasha. Through his hard work and vision, he developed Gunderson Inc. into the largest privately owned laundry in the State of Wisconsin before he retired in 1989.
A respected member of the community, Douglas served as President of the Menasha Rotary Club. While serving as President of the Menasha Chamber of Commerce, Doug was instrumental in the merger of the Neenah and Menasha Chambers. In his industry, he was responsible for developing synergy between Laundry and Dry Cleaning Industries of Wisconsin.
Doug’s accomplishments and passion for life in his career were also reflected in his hobbies. An avid golfer and fisherman he earned the name “Musky Doug” and won a Long Drive Award at the age of 85 - while legally blind!
Douglas enjoyed life - and it was infectious. Enjoyed by everyone who was lucky enough to meet him, Doug’s quick wit, big smile and Norwegian blue eyes created friendships that lasted decades. His laughter and love will be most deeply missed by his wife, Mary, children Gary(Judy) Gunderson and Johnette Gunderson. Eight grandchildren survive: Eric and Amy Jones, Sara (Ryan) Hawkins, Douglas (Corrin) Gunderson, Gregory (Amy) Gunderson, Emily, Elise and Ethan Echola along with eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, and son and daughter-in-law William and Betsy Jones.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Menasha, WI from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM followed by a funeral mass. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.
Doug’s family requests that in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the Douglas & Mary Gunderson Family Memorial Fund held at the Community Foundation for the Fox Cities, 4455 West Lawrence Street, Appleton WI 54914
